Keeley Hawes talked to Best Magazine about Orphan Black: Echoes and her character Kira Manning. Read the transcribed interview below:

Hi Keeley! What is Orphan Black: Echoes about?

It’s the sequel to Orphan Black and is set in 2052. It follows the story of Kira Manning (whom we met as the child of Sarah Manning in the original series). She is now a scientist herself and works in the world of cloning for medical purposes.

Tell us a bit about your character…

She’s married to Eleanor and they have a son, Lucas. But when Kira realises she is losing her wife to Alzheimer’s, she’s thrown into an ethical dilemma – should she use her scientific expertise to bring back the love of her life? She is quietly driven, kind and brilliant.

What attracted you to the project in the first place?

I was attracted to the project by, as always, great writing, and having watched the original series, I was intrigued to be part of the Clone Club universe.

Do you think the subject matter is not that far from future reality?

We are already seeing huge advances in the world of cloning for medical purposes. I think Orphan Black: Echoes comes very close to what we’ll be seeing in the future!

What’s next for you?

I’ve just finished a play at The Donmar [theatre in London] and I’m looking forward to some exciting projects for the rest of 2024. And I would love to see the Orphan Black universe expand.

About “Orphan Black: Echoes”:

Set in the near future, Orphan Black: Echoes takes a deep dive into the exploration of the scientific manipulation of human existence. It follows a group of women who embark on a thrilling journey, unravelling the mystery of their identity and uncovering a wrenching story of love and betrayal.

Streaming on ITVX from 16 May.
